CAMP LEATHERNECK:
The United States Marine Corps base, Camp Leatherneck, is the biggest Marine Military base in all of Afghanistan. Sitting at an amazing 1,600 acres, Camp Leatherneck was originally planned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Camp Leatherneck is located in Helmand, Province Afghanistan. The reason for the location of Camp Leatherneck, was to be a suitable location for Two to Fifteen Thousand troops, the primary purpose for the base was to house at an estimated 26,000 increase of Marine forces.
THE CONSTRUCTION:
The construction for Camp Leatherneck began in 2008 under the 25th Naval Construction Regiment, (NCR), Camp Leatherneck was designed, and built in a modular fashion to provide housing, and workspace as Surge Forces began to flow into the Theater. Every aspect of construction had been focused on speed, along with the understanding that the number of troops was unknown. The construction of the base was carried on for several years by U.S. Marines to help improve facilities on the base.
A BUILDING TO WASTE:
There is a building, built in just a short amount of time that was pretty much a waste of money, and might not ever be used at U.S. Marine Corps base in Afghanistan, Camp Leatherneck.
With just a short walk away from the U.S. headquarters at U.S. Marine base Camp Leatherneck, is a two story, 64,000 square foot building. The big building cost 34 million dollars to build, and the building may not ever be used due to not finding any purpose for the big building to serve a purpose for. The building is able to accommodate 1,200 to 1,500 staff members, the building includes a briefing theater, a war room, and offices for senior military staff.
FALLEN SOLIDERS:
Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus, and Maj. Gen. Gregg Sturdevant, were quickly forced into retirement on September 30th 2013, due to a previous attack on United States Marine Corps base, Camp Leatherneck. On September 14-15, the Taliban led an attack on Camp Leatherneck, the attack unfortunately killed two United States Marines, (Sgt. Bradley Attwell, & Lt. Col. Christopher Raible.), injured several other soldiers, and destroyed six Harrier jets. Fifteen Taliban fighters dressed in U.S. Army uniforms, cut their way all the way through the perimeter wires and began the attack on the biggest Marine base in Afghanistan, Camp Leatherneck. The weapon choices for the attack were explosives, such as rocket launchers, mortars, grenade launchers, and hand held grenades. After four hours of fighting, the United States Marine Corps defeated the Taliban, and wiped them out of Camp Leatherneck, but unfortunately the attack took the lives of two American heroes, fighting for our country. The events that took place at Camp Leatherneck, in Afghanistan, were a big deal, and a major tragedy, and the Two Marines that lost lives fighting for our freedom, will never be forgotten.
